2011 Klondike Derby

The Matianuck district of the CT Rivers Council will be holding it's annual Klondike Derby on February 4-5 at Camp Workcoman. The theme is "Disaster in Alaska" and it will be a mission profile adventure.

If you are interested in forming a crew from Troop 175 and have an adult leader that will attend with you, please see Mr. Mead at the next troop meeting.

Simsbury Boy Scout Troop 175 To hold Open House At Onion Mountain

Simsbury Boy Scout Troop 175 is known for its adventure trips and outdoor camping skills. On the Weekend of November 13-14 the troop will hold an open house at Onion Mountain on West Mountain Road in West Simsbury for all area Webelos and any other boy between the ages of 11 and 17 interested in learning more about scouting.

The weekend will begin at noon and the current scouts will have prepared a zip line, ropes course, and a typical campsite with survival shelter for the event. Visitors will be able to participate in an Iron Chef cooking competition, a fire building with flint and steel contest, night time capture the flag game (bring a flashlight) and end the night sitting around a campfire telling jokes, watching skits and singing songs.

Parents are invited to enjoy a campfire and learn more about the scouting program at Troop 175 while their sons are embedded with boy scout patrols for the afternoon.

Jam Fest 2009

 Troop 175 did not let 2009 go out quietly. The last troop meeting of the year was known as "Jam Fest 2009" with scouts showing off their impressive musical talents.

December Trip Change

Please note the date for December's troop trip has been changed to the weekend of December 12-13.  This trip will be an overnight to Mt. Monadnock State Park in Southern NH.

Holloween Car Wash

This Saturday, October 31st, please stop by St. Mary's school parking lot from 9am to 2pm and the scouts of Troop 175 wash your car with all proceeds going to benefit the in Moshi, Tanzania.

This fund raiser is being organized by Carter Hill, a Boy Scout with Troop 175 in Simsbury. Two summers ago he traveled to Tanzania, Africa and met workers from the Mkombozi Centre For Street Children- an organization that educates, feeds and clothes children who have been orphaned, most from the AIDS/HIV epidemic in Africa. The experience of meeting these children and workers had a profound impact on his life and he have chosen this organization as the focus of my Eagle Scout Project.

Here is how you can help to deliver these very needed items to the children.

June Court of Honor is a big splash

Simsbury Troop 175 celebrate the beginning of summer with a pool party and Court of Honor at Troop Scoutmaster Mead's house. Highlights included a belly flop contest, greased watermelon competition, volleyball, trying to catch Keegan, lots of hot dogs and hamburgers and lots of family and friends.

At the Court of Honor, scouts received their rank advancements and merit badges (including some that were not BSA approved). Also announced were the newest members of the Immortals and next year's senior patrol leaders.

Troop 175 to Hold Eagle Court of Honor

 

Sunday, June 7th at St. Mary's Church we will be honoring five new Eagle Scouts from Simsbury Troop 175. Grant Osborne, Dan Kalamarides, Lee Adamowicz, Cortland Carter and Mike Vallen will all receive the highest Honor in Scouting. Their Families, friends and and the troop are an important part of this great day. Town and State officials will participate as will many community leaders. It will be in St. Mary's church promptly at 2 PM and there will be a reception afterwards at the Parish Center.

We would like the Troop to attend in full Class A uniform. If you are new to Scouting this is our annual Eagle Ceremony and a very different one  than our regular Courts of Honors. Come help honor those Scouts that have helped you along your advancement trail.

National Youth Leadership Training

National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed to
provide youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experiences
they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

Monday August 3 – Saturday August 8, 2009
Camp Mattatuck
Cost $225.00

The course has space for 64 youth participants. Two youth per troop will be accepted as participants. Participants must be 13 years of age and 1st class or its equivalent.

Scout Ski Weekend

If you are going on the ski trip this weekend, don't forget that if you want to use the terrain park at Stratton, you must watch the safety video on-line and fill out the permission slip before the trip.  The link is:

NBC-30 Weatherman Bob Maxon to Speak to Troop

Bob Maxon is the weekday morning meteorologist on NBC-TV 30 from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m., and again at 11 a.m. He will be attending the December 11th troop meeting at St. Catherine of Siena in West Simsbury to discuss the weather.

Scouts in Troop 175 should review the requirements of the Weather Merit Badge prior to the meeting in order to get a better understanding of what will be covered.

Cub Night at Troop 175

The basement and gym of St Mary's became a testing ground for the Scouts of Troop 175 and interested Webelos from around town. Troop 175 hosted a series of Cub nights and everyone had a blast building bridges across a 15 ft gap in the gym and climbing around the church basement on rope bridges.

Boy Scout Troop 175 Open House

Troop 175 will be hosting an Open house on November 13th at the St. Mary's Parish Hall on Hopmeadow street across from the town Hall from 7 - 9 PM.

All boys who have completed the 5th grade or who are 10 years old and have not reached their 18th birthday yet are welcome to join. Cubs who are part of the Weblos 2 program can join in January of this coming year.

During our Open House the Scouts will be building bridges and engaging in a competition to be the first team to get across a 16 foot Valley. All visitors will get a chance to help out and get to know our Scouts a little better. Parents will get a chance to meet our Scout Parents and chat about our programs. We will also have a brief slide show showing some of our trips and what we do.

Hop Meadow Pro Teaches Scouts to Golf

Sixteen scouts from Simsbury Boy Scout Troop 175 earned their golf merit badge with the help of Hop Meadow Country Club Head Pro Jason Waters. Mr. Waters spent time with the scouts on the practice range and on the course increasing their understanding and appreciation of the game of golf. The scouts learned about the rules of golf and the USGA handicapping system as well as proper grip and swinging of the clubs.

Troop 175 wishes to thank Mr. Waters and the members of Hop Meadow Country Club for allowing the scouts to play on the course to demonstrate the skills they have learned.

Scouts Burn U.S. Flags

Boy Scouts from Troop 175 took time out of their weekly meeting to destroy 16 American flags in a solemn ceremony. The Boy Scouts of America are one of the organizations charged with the duty to retire old worn out flags through a ceremony that honors the flag and what it stands for.

The ceremony was led by First Class Scout Nicholas Carabillo.

2008-09 Scout Leadership Named

At the June 26th Scout Picnic, pool party  and Court of Honor, Lee Adamovich was named the Senior Patrol  Leader of Simsbury Boy Scout Troop 175 for 2008-2009 season.  Lee, who most recently held the post of Immortal's Chief, will be responsible for planning and leading the troop meetings throughout the year.

Assisting Lee will be three Top Notch Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders:
Max Drake, Gabe Benjamin and Rob Carter.

Mr. Mead also congratulated Cortlandt Carter for a superb job as the outgoing SPL and his ASPL's Grant Osbourn and Scott Miller.

Troop 175 Ends The Year With A Splash

Simsbury Boy Scout Troop 175 ended the scout year with a pool party, picnic and outdoor Court of Honor at Scoutmaster Brad Mead's house on June 26th.  The scouts, joined by sibling and parents, played watermelon polo in the pool, volleyball, Ultimate Frisby or just chilled out before a great picnic dinner.

At the Court of Honor 60 merit badges were awarded to scouts for work they had completed throughout the year.  Merit badges included  Environmental Science, Space Exploration, First Aid Emergency Preparedness, Home Repair and Wilderness Survival.

2nd Class : BrandonBush,  Jason Child, Isaac Peacock, Will Shuck and Ryan Weathers

Star : Tommy Adamowicz, Rob Burke Keegan Rice and Zach Zikovich   

Life : Cort  Carter

Grant Osbourn was also recognized for completing his requirements for Eagle rank which will be awarded next June.

Dedication of the Ben Clark Boathouse at Camp Mattatuck

On June 21, 2008 about 70 people gathered at Camp Mattatuck to honor the life of Ben Clark. In attendance were Ben's family, current and former scouts, scoutmasters, parents and friends. 18 Eagles Scouts were in attendance.

The Ben Clark Boat House will house all of the camps water craft and docks during the winter also it will be use as a repair shop for boats during the summer months.  Ben’s Boat House is going to be a significant improvement to the Camp facilities and will be actively used throughout the year. This project captures Ben’s love of the water and enthusiasm for water sports.

Simsbury Memorial Day Parade

Troop 175 will be marching in the Memorial Day Parade. All who can should plan to attend in Class A Uniform. We would like to have as large a group as possible.

The meeting place is Owens Brook Rd at the Simsbury Bank Building at 1:00Pm on Monday. The parade starts at 1:30PM. This is one of the ways in which we honor our veteran

May Trip Update

Our May Trip will focus on backpacking and day hiking excursions in the backwoods of the Adirondak Mountains.  On Friday May 23rd will depart for Lake Placid NY.  We have reserved campsites at the Adirondak Loj, just outside Lake Placid.  This is a beautiful campground managed by the  Adirondak Mountain Club. Additional information regarding this trip can be found in the Troop Google Group announcement.

We have a limited number of campsites so I will need to know as soon as possible if you plan on attending.
